An isolated young buffalo looks overwhelmed by the hunters until help comes to the rescue
A buffalo herd send two lions packing with their tales firmly between their legs after they fend off an attack on one of their own.
The tables were firmly turned on the two predators as the hunters became the hunted
The predators targeted the young buffalo after it had wandered away from its herd to feed and sensing an easy meal they stealthily moved in for the kill.
Realising its mistake too late, the lone buffalo tries desperately to fight off both lions with its deadly horns as they circle in looking for an opportunity to attack.
The older of the two lions then spots its mom
ent and outflanks the buffalo's horns and bites it hard on the back and uses its claws and weight to drag it down.
The second lion then pounces and also bites the buffalo and sinks all four claws into the rump of the buffalo which drops a second time down to the ground.
The lions however were still young and unable to quickly kill what they saw as supper and the stricken buffalo desperately bellows for help from the herd.
Astonishingly the herd responds and in this extremely rare video footage they gather together and attack the lions as one as they staged a daring rescue.
The herd of at least 10 buffalo - one of the deadliest animals in Africa - have their tails raised in agitation and are snorting their anger at they confront the two lions.
On the first charge the younger lion loses its nerve and releases its hold on the buffalo and runs for safety in the bush.
The buffalo herd squickly regroup and charge a second time as the bigger and older lion refuses to leave the young buffalo and tries to quickly finish it off.
But this time its nerve breaks as well and facing the mass of horns turns and runs off with its tail between its legs – the Kings of the Jungle well and truly deposed.
The lions’ ignominious dethroning happened at the Umlani Bushcamp in Timbavati Private Nature Reserve in the Kruger National Park in South Africa.
The video was posted on Facebook by “Calao camp” for wildlife fans to share.

“Incredible action between two lions and a herd of buffaloes who fight back and chase the lions away”.
The older lion is seen walking away from the fired up herd looking rather embarrassed while the roughed up young buffalo counts its lucky stars.
