15 ‘innocent’ students identified

The committee formed to identify ‘innocent’ students involved in the incident that rocked Panjab University on April 11 today prepared a list of 15 such students. It submitted its report to Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover.
Confirming the same, the Vice-Chancellor said he had submitted the report to the Governor’s office.
“A copy of the report will also go to the disciplinary committee of Panjab University, which will decide the further course of action,” he said.
The VC added that the students would have to feel remorseful for their involvement in the incident even if they were to be let off.
The meeting started around 11.30 am and went on till late in the evening. The committee members checked the video grab of the incident to identify the students. Yesterday, Prof Arun Kumar Grover met Punjab Governor-cum-UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore to discuss the events that took place on the campus on Tuesday.
The Administrator asked the PU authorities to review all issues relating to the enhancement of the internal income of the university, including the Senate-approved tuition fee hike, in a holistic manner. Badnore has also offered to help the university in seeking a solution from the Central Government.
The Joint Student Action Committee (JSAC) has demanded a re-investigation into Tuesday’s incident that rocked Panjab University. Students submitted a letter to the Chandigarh SSP on Saturday. The letter stated that “all students were innocent”. It read that the students were picked up from the parking of AC Joshi Library, classrooms and labs of the UICET, mathematics department and boys’ hostel numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. “The students arrested during the incident were busy attending classes or studying in the library for competitive exams,” the letter stated. It said some of the students had qualified judiciary exam and had been falsely implicated.
The JSAC has requested the SSP to re-investigate the incident and take necessary legal action against the “irresponsible behaviour of the police”. The JSAC members have also alleged that there were persons who had covered their faces during the incident.
Parents who think their wards are innocent may submit details along with students’ photographs to the committee to assist the administration in identifying innocent students. Prof Ashwani Kaul, chief, university security, and professor in the department of biophysics, who heads the committee, said parents could submit the details and photographs. “We will look into the same,” Kaul said.
Eleven supporters of the NSUI were taken into preventive custody on Saturday. They were protesting outside the residence of MP Kirron Kher. Those taken into custody include NSUI president Gurjot Sandhu, campus in charge Harinder Singh Johny and other members. The NSUI members were demanding that the FIR against Panjab University students be cancelled. Their other demands included release of grant for PU and change in education related policies. The students were later let off.
